Year 9 Physical Education

Physical Education is a core subject and is compulsory for all pupils.  Physical Education is more important than ever because: -
Today children are not as active as previous generations.  Their life-styles are too comfortable, such as watching television, playing computer games and travelling in cars.  Lifelong physical activity is essential for good health.
We try to ensure that all pupils experience a comprehensive range of activities.

Formal Curriculum
Two hours a week divided into the following activities.

Gymnastics  - Pupils plan and perform sequences of movement whilst working on themes of flight and balance with partners, on apparatus and the floor.  They practice formal skills already taught and learn new skills, e.g. Round off.

Dance - Taught only to the girls in Year 9.  Pupils compose and perform more complex dances using the theme of “A Swimming Pool”.  They use videos as a stimulus and learn and practice dances using different dance styles, e.g. Jazz.

Games - Divided into:
1)  Invasion - Netball and Hockey (Girls), Football, Rugby (Boys).
2)  Striking Games - Cricket and Rounders.
3)  Net Games - Tennis.
In games, pupils practice and learn new skills.  They adapt principles, techniques and tactics within the full games.

Health-related exercise
Athletics - Pupils practice and learn new skills in Track and Field events and learn to apply competition rules.

Problem Solving - Taught only to the boys. Pupils work within a group to find solutions for different problems that they encounter.
All above activities are taught in single sex groupings.
