RELIGIOUS STUDIES
In accordance with the 1988 and 1993 Education Act, Religious Studies must be provided for all pupils in the Authority’s schools. As a statutory subject Religious Studies has the same status as the subjects in the National Curriculum.
AIMS OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES:-
The programmes of study in R.S. aim at leading pupils to:-
• Learn and develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity, and of the other major religions found in the British Isles
• Foster the ability to form an opinion and respond logically and in an informed manner to religious, spiritual and moral questions and to apply the understanding that they gain
• Develop respect, sensitivity and empathy with those who profess different faiths
• Develop spiritually, morally, socially, culturally and mentally
• Understand and appreciate the role and influence of religion locally and nationally
CONTENT:-
The content of the R.S. syllabus for Year 8 is:-
Term 1 – Festivals and Celebrations
Term 2 – Islam
Term 3 – Birth Ceremonies
Christianity in Action – Martin Luther Ling
ASSESSMENT:-
Pupils will be assessed in a number of different ways. They are continually assessed in their homework and classwork. There are also formal assessment items including tests. There are 3 written assessments, one for each term:-
Term 1 – Yom Kippur
Term 2 – The Hajj
Term 3 – Martin Luther King slide show
HOMEWORK is set to reinforce work carried out in the classroom. The task may be in the form of the completion of work started in class, some personal research or any additional task which reinforces class activity. Pupils will need the following equipment for the subject: pens (blue or black), pencil and sharpener, rubber, ruler, colouring pencils, glue stick.
