Physical Education Year 7

Physical Education is a core subject and is compulsory for all pupils.  Physical Education is more important than ever because today children are not as active as previous generations.  Their life-styles are too comfortable, spending time watching television, playing with computer games and travelling in cars.  Lifelong physical activity is essential for good health. We try to ensure that all pupils experience a comprehensive range of activities.

FORMAL CURRICULUM - two hours per week plus a dance module.

Gymnastics - This activity is taught by using themes:- travelling - going and stopping, including shapes - transference of weight; formal skills of rolls, handstands and cartwheels are also taught.  Pupils perform on floor and apparatus.

Dance - One module of 6 hours taught in mixed sex groups.  Also taught by using themes of travelling and shapes.  Pupil compose dances on their own and with partners.

Games - One hour a week of games activities.  These are divided into:

1) Invasion games - Netball, Hockey, Football and Rugby.
2) Health-related exercise.
3) Striking/net games – cricket, softball, rounders, tennis.
4) Athletics.

In games pupils learn the skills of receiving, controlling and distributing the ball in small game situations.  In athletics, pupils learn running, jumping and throwing skills.  Games, gymnastic and athletic activities are taught in single sex groups.

EVALUATION, MONITORING AND REPORTING PUPILS’ PROGRESS

EVALUATION: Pupils are assessed on their performance in all the above activities in accordance with National Curriculum guidelines. Effort/ Attitude is an ongoing assessment.  Cardio-vascular fitness is also assessed.  Pupils are encouraged to self-evaluate their performance.

MONITORING: All the information is used to monitor the pupils’ progress throughout the year.  Progress is recorded on K.S.3 group assessment sheets.
